Bishop Joseph Eciru Oliach of Soroti Catholic Diocese has called upon Christians to embrace repentance and renew their faith in the Gospel.
In his lent homily, the bishop urged the faithful to be determined in their spiritual journey and use this sacred period as a time of transformation and growth.

Bishop Eciru emphasized that Lent is not merely a season of abstinence but a time for deep reflection and strategic spiritual renewal.

“Be resolute and charged for the battle so that when the enemy sees us, it must be trembling,” he said, encouraging Christians to take a firm stand against sin and temptation.
The bishop reminded believers that their Lenten journey should not be taken lightly.

Instead, they must approach it with purpose and determination, just as a soldier prepares for battle.
He urged Christians to strengthen their faith, deepen their prayers, and make conscious efforts to turn away from sin.
“This season calls for discipline, focus, and self-examination,” Bishop Eciru stated.
“We must reflect on our lives, identify areas of weakness, and be strategic in eradicating the evil within us.”
He further noted that Lent provides an opportunity for renewal, a time to seek reconciliation with God and one another.
Fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, he emphasized, should not just be rituals but acts that bring about real change in people’s lives.
Bishop Eciru challenged Christians to go beyond individual repentance and actively contribute to transforming their communities.
He urged the faithful to be agents of peace, justice, and compassion, working to eliminate corruption, hatred, and other societal evils.
“In this battle, we are called to fight with love, forgiveness, and truth,” he said.
“By embracing the teachings of Christ, we can overcome evil and bring light into the world.”
He also encouraged Christians to engage in acts of charity, helping those in need as a way of demonstrating Christ’s love.
“Lent is a time to reach out to the poor, the sick, and the suffering. Our faith should be reflected in our actions,” he added.
Bishop Eciru concluded his message by reminding Christians that Lent is not a time of despair but of hope and renewal.
He encouraged believers to embrace the season with joy, knowing that their efforts in prayer, fasting, and good deeds will bring them closer to God.
“As we journey through this season, let us remain steadfast and trust in God’s grace. Repent and believe in the Gospel, for it is through faith and determination that we can emerge victorious,” he said.
