The Dean of Katakwi Catholic Parish, Rev. Fr. Patrick Achedu, has urged Christians across Katakwi District, the wider Teso sub-region, and Uganda at large to dedicate their prayers to ensuring peaceful elections as the country prepares for upcoming polls.

Speaking at St. Anna Catholic Church in Usuk Town Council, Katakwi District, Rev. Fr. Achedu delivered the call during the blessing and celebration of the 317th Holy Missionary Childhood Day, an event that brought together hundreds of faithful.

“With the support of prayer, everything will be perfect,” he said, emphasizing that lasting peace and stability during elections can only be achieved when communities seek God’s guidance and embrace unity.
Fr. Achedu’s message comes at a time when Uganda’s political temperature is slowly rising in anticipation of both local-level internal party primaries and the 2026 general elections.

His call for prayer resonated deeply with the congregation, with many local leaders echoing the appeal for peace, tolerance, and responsible leadership.
Hon. Geoffrey Omolo, the LCV Chairperson for Katakwi District, applauded Rev. Fr. Achedu for being, in his words, “a truthful and balanced person” whose leadership has consistently promoted harmony in the district.
“Let us stop hatred and egoism if we are to benefit from our leaders,” Omolo told the congregation. “We need to unite as a people and support one another for our district to move forward.”
Meanwhile, Katakwi Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Xavier Vincent Okwi assured residents of a peaceful environment during the upcoming NRM internal elections slated for Thursday, 17th July 2025.
“The president has given Katakwi District and the Teso sub-region enough soldiers to ensure peace between regions,” Okwi said.
He reassured voters that the security agencies are prepared to maintain calm and order, allowing all eligible participants to freely exercise their rights.
Filbert Ocailap, the RDC of Karenga District, who highlighted the government’s efforts to maintain security in the broader Karamoja sub-region.
“My office has worked hard to ensure security in Karamoja,” Ocailap said.
He urged the people of Teso and Karamoja to continue supporting peace initiatives and to remain vigilant against forces that might sow division or conflict.
Usuk County MP Bosco Okiror also addressed the gathering, commending the people of Usuk for their responsible and resilient approach to politics.
“Let’s continue to emulate such manners so that we end our elections peacefully,” Okiror urged.
He encouraged constituents to maintain their commitment to non-violence, respect for divergent views, and peaceful resolution of disagreements.
Meanwhile, Uganda’s Vice President also addressed the congregation, emphasizing the need for dedicated, people-centered leadership in Katakwi District.
“Katakwi still needs leaders who matter and who have time for their voters,” the Vice President said, reminding attendees that the ruling NRM government remains committed to uplifting citizens’ livelihoods through initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and the Youth Livelihood Programme.
“These programs are evidence of our government’s plan for the betterment of its citizens,” she added, calling on local leaders to ensure that such programs reach their intended beneficiaries.
