The National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for Serere District Chairperson, Martin Onguruco, has appealed to the government to strengthen health services in the district by constructing a fully equipped modern mortuary.
Onguruco, who was dressed in his yellow NRM party colours, made the remarks on Sunday while attending burial ceremonies in Kamod and Labor sub-counties, Kasilo County.

He commended President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his commitment to improving health services in Serere, particularly for approving the upgrade of Serere Health Centre IV to a District Hospital.

Onguruco noted that once upgraded, the facility will significantly enhance healthcare delivery by attracting more doctors, improving infrastructure, and increasing medical equipment thereby reducing congestion at the lower-level Health Centre IIIs.
“Upgrading Serere Health Centre IV into a district hospital will be a big milestone in improving healthcare delivery. It will ensure our people access quality medical care without travelling long distances,” Onguruco said.

The NRM flag bearer emphasized the urgent need for a modern mortuary, noting that the lack of such a facility has become a major challenge for residents.
Currently, many families rely on keeping bodies at Bethesda Hospital in Soroti City or Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, which he said is both costly and inconvenient.
He also appealed to the government to extend electricity to all health facilities across the district and ensure that essential drugs are fully stocked to improve service delivery.
Onguruco, who is contesting for the LCV Chairperson seat in Serere, said that if elected, he will move a resolution in the District Council to restrict burials to weekends only.
He argued that this will allow residents to effectively manage their farming and daily economic activities amid the rising number of deaths in the district.
“We need to strike a balance between mourning our loved ones and maintaining productivity. Limiting burials to weekends will help our people manage their time better,” he added.
On matters of security, Onguruco urged the public to remain vigilant and to report all cases of theft, killings, and other criminal activities to security agencies for immediate intervention.
He also encouraged parents to closely monitor their children, especially those who have just completed the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), warning that idleness during holidays exposes them to negative peer influence and criminal behavior.
In his closing remarks, Onguruco rallied the people of Serere to massively support and vote for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the NRM in the upcoming 2025 general elections, emphasizing that continued support for the ruling party would ensure sustained development and stability in the district.
Meanwhile, Richard Egimu, the LC1 Chairperson of Asereko Village, Kamod Town Council, reported a surge in insecurity in the area.
He noted an increase in theft cases and raised concern about children loitering in trading centres, especially those on holiday, urging parents and local leaders to work together to keep the community safe.
