The nomination of former army commander and Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) presidential candidate, Gen. Mugisha Muntu, has run into a setback, prompting senior leaders from his political camp to seek clarification from the Electoral Commission (EC).
On Tuesday, Michael Kabaziguruka of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) and Alice Alaso, ANT’s National Coordinator, visited the EC headquarters in Kampala to establish why Muntu had not yet been cleared for the 2026 presidential race.

PFF and ANT recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on key political objectives, including mobilization, joint candidate support, and strengthening structures to challenge the ruling NRM in next year’s general election.

The alliance has since fronted Gen. Muntu as their flagbearer, describing him as a candidate of integrity, moderation, and national unity.
Speaking after the closed-door meeting with EC officials, Ms. Alaso said the coalition was concerned about the unexplained delay in the clearance process.

“We submitted all the requirements in good time and we expected our candidate to be processed like others. The delay is raising anxiety among our members and we came to find out the exact cause,” she told journalists outside the EC headquarters.
Mr. Kabaziguruka echoed her sentiments, stressing that transparency and fairness were critical in building confidence in the electoral process.
“We are not here to beg. We are here to demand what is due. Our candidate has fulfilled every requirement, and any attempt to frustrate his nomination is unacceptable,” Kabaziguruka said.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has confirmed receipt of formal correspondence from ANT seeking clarification on Muntu’s nomination status.
Political analysts say the PFF-ANT alliance could reconfigure the opposition landscape if managed effectively, given Muntu’s reputation as a disciplined politician with a clean record of service.
