Kanyum County Member of Parliament, Hon. Simon Peter Opolot Okwalinga, has announced plans to establish a multi-sectoral technical school in the constituency as part of his broader commitment to transforming education and livelihoods in the area.
The announcement was made during a symbolic ceremony where his team rewarded Obokora Primary School polling station, which delivered a 100% vote tally for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the last elections.

Speaking on behalf of the MP, Professor John Charles Okiria, a senior technical advisor, revealed that the school will be officially launched on the day of Hon. Opolot’s nomination for the 2026 elections.

According to Prof. Okiria, the initiative is one of the biggest undertakings yet in the education sector of Kanyum County, designed to address the skills gap among youth.
“We are already preparing materials and have secured ten plots for the construction. This multi-sectoral institution will offer courses in bricklaying, welding, building, tailoring, and other vocational skills. All these programs will be delivered at modest charges because the intention is to give back to the community as part of our guardianship responsibility,” Prof. Okiria said.

At the same event, Obokora polling station was recognized for its overwhelming support for the NRM and MP Opolot.
The station delivered 100% of votes to the ruling party, a feat that earned it a live bull and sacks of rice.
Prof. Okiria, while handing over the gifts, said it was a way of appreciating the loyalty and discipline of the voters.
“We promised that any polling station that registers 100% for the party would receive a bull as a gift. Obokora polling station did just that, and today we have come to honor that promise,” he noted.
The gesture was received with excitement by residents, who pledged to continue rallying behind the NRM and Hon. Opolot in the 2026 polls.
Local leaders used the event to call for peaceful and issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Onyaa Gilbert, the GISO of Kanyum County, emphasized that violence has no place in the politics of the area.
“We must reject any attempts to divide or incite our people. Elections should be about ideas and service delivery, not intimidation,” he said, urging voters to remain vigilant and resist manipulation by candidates with “selfish interests.”
Similarly, the LCIII Chairperson of Kanyum Town Council, Mr. Faustine Opit, called on residents to re-elect MP Opolot, praising him for delivering tangible improvements in education, agriculture, and social support.

Over the past years, Hon. Opolot has rolled out a number of initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of his constituents.
Residents who spoke at the event cited several programs that have directly impacted their lives:
Education Support: Through bursaries and sponsorships, the MP has enabled many children from humble backgrounds to access quality education.
Parents like Akol Mary Immaculate testified that her children benefited from his support, while others noted that he has consistently assisted schools with scholastic materials and infrastructure.
Agricultural Inputs: Recognizing that the majority of Kanyum residents are farmers, MP Opolot has distributed hand hoes and supported ox-plough programs.
Beneficiaries such as Kolosika Ikilai and Akia Betty credited him for easing farming burdens and improving productivity.
Youth and Women Empowerment: Groups of women and youth have received bicycles, gomesis, and small-scale capital to engage in income-generating activities.
These initiatives have helped households diversify their earnings and improved community resilience.
Community Infrastructure: In addition to the upcoming technical school, MP Opolot has been instrumental in supporting the construction of classroom blocks and the renovation of community facilities across Kanyum County.
These interventions, residents said, have set him apart from many leaders who promise during campaigns but fail to deliver.
During the gathering, Akareut Mary, the Kanyum County NRM Coordinator, praised the MP’s leadership and appealed to independent candidates to reconsider their positions.
She emphasized that unity under the NRM flag would guarantee continued service delivery and development.
Simon Peter Opolot Jaman, another speaker at the event, echoed similar sentiments, urging independent candidates to step aside and work with the incumbent.
“This is not the time for division. Let us consolidate our votes under the party so that we can achieve bigger victories and attract more government projects,” he stressed.
Residents at the event hailed MP Opolot as a leader who has kept his word and worked closely with his community.
Akol Mary Immaculate noted his consistency in supporting vulnerable groups, while Omongole Ezra and Apolot Josephine lauded his role in promoting education and giving special attention to the girl child.
The event closed with renewed pledges from both leaders and voters to ensure peaceful campaigns and resounding support for Hon. Opolot in the forthcoming elections.
As preparations for the technical school launch intensify, many see it as a game-changing project that will empower youth with practical skills, reduce unemployment, and boost the county’s socioeconomic progress.
For residents of Kanyum, the school symbolizes not only Hon. Opolot’s commitment to education but also his vision for a self-reliant and prosperous community.
