The Serere District LCV Chairperson, Stephen Ochola, yesterday announced his intention to challenge Emmanuel Omoding, the son of the late MP Patrick Okabe, in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
Ochola said this during the belated Serere District Women’s Day celebrations, held at Ochapa Grounds, where he urged the people of Serere to elect a “mature and experienced leader” who can collaborate effectively with other government officials for meaningful development.

“Serere deserves a leader who understands the systems of governance and development. I am ready to work hand-in-hand with Minister Hellen Adoa, an outstanding leader, to bring more projects to our people,” Ochola said.

Ochola will contest on the ticket of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), a party he aligns with its values of service, transparency, and community transformation.
Stephen Ochola is a veteran politician in Teso sub-region with a deep understanding of local governance and parliamentary politics.

He first entered Parliament in 2011, representing Serere County, and served until 2016, when he lost his seat to MP Omoding’s Late Father.
During his tenure in Parliament, Ochola was known for his active participation in education and infrastructure development programs.
He advocated for better road networks, health services, and youth empowerment.
After his parliamentary term, he remained active in local politics and was elected as the LCV Chairperson of Serere District, a position he has held since 2021.
Ochola’s political comeback under the FDC banner marks a strategic shift in the district’s opposition politics.
Known for his eloquence, mobilization skills, and firm stance on accountability, he presents a significant challenge to Omoding’s reelection bid.
But the Incumbent MP Emmanuel Omoding, who was also present at the function, reiterated his commitment to fulfilling the promises he made during the 2023 by-election.
He emphasized that he would continue to support Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) initiated by his late father, Hon. Patrick Okabe, which aim to uplift families out of poverty.
“We began this journey together with my late father. I will not abandon it. I will be returning soon to fulfill my pledges and ask for your continued support in 2026,” Omoding said.
Omoding also expressed optimism that the people of Serere will trust him again, not because of sympathy, but based on his growing record and commitment to service.
MP Omoding’s Late Father Patrick Okabe tragically died in a road accident alongside his wife Christine Okabe on December 19, 2022, along the Mbale-Tirinyi Road.
His death left a vacuum in Serere politics and triggered a by-election.
In the by-election held on February 23, 2023, his son, Emmanuel Omoding, running as an independent candidate, captured the seat after winning a heated contest dominated by emotion and public sympathy.
Though lacking prior political experience, Omoding garnered support from the electorate who sought to honor his father’s legacy.
He defeated several experienced candidates, including Philip Oucor, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer.
The 2026 Serere County MP race is already shaping up to be one of the most contested in the region. Other aspirants lining up include: Philip Oucor – NRM Flag Bearer, Gilbert Etomet, Stephen Ariong, Emmah Okwii, Stephen Ochola (FDC), and others.
