The political landscape of Kasilo County is heating up as Journalist Edward Eninu has officially declared his intention to challenge long-serving legislator Hon. Elijah Okupa in the 2026 parliamentary elections.
Eninu’s announcement has already stirred intense debate across Kaberamaido District, signaling what could be one of the most fiercely contested races in the region.

Okupa, who has represented Kasilo County for over two decades, has built a reputation as one of Teso’s most influential political figures.

However, critics argue that his prolonged stay in office has stalled generational change and left little room for fresh leadership. Eninu, known for his bold commentary and investigative journalism, says he is determined to “restore hope and deliver the real change Kasilo deserves.”
Speaking to TNN, Eninu a rallied against what he termed “politics of complacency” that has crippled development in the area.

“For over 20 years, Kasilo has remained in the hands of one man. While we respect Hon. Okupa’s service, it is time to give the people of Kasilo new energy, new ideas, and new leadership,” Eninu declared.
He outlined his vision focusing on improved education, modern farming techniques, youth employment programs, and better healthcare access, asserting that these sectors have suffered neglect despite Kasilo’s vast potential.
Eninu also pledged to use his media experience to amplify local voices in Parliament, arguing that Kasilo’s concerns are often overshadowed in national debates.
Taking on Okupa will not be an easy task.
The FDC stalwart has won multiple elections with relative ease, leveraging his strong grassroots networks and reputation for resilience.
Okupa, a seasoned opposition figure, is known for his fiery debates in Parliament and his consistent criticism of government policies he deems unfair to Teso and Uganda at large.
However, political analysts note that the tide in Kasilo may be shifting.
With growing youth voter registration and frustration over stalled infrastructure projects, Eninu’s message of “renewed leadership” is finding fertile ground among first-time voters and those disenchanted by the status quo.
“Eninu’s entry into the race is significant,” says political commentator Moses Edeke.
“He brings a fresh face and the credibility of someone who has exposed corruption and poor service delivery in his journalism career. If he capitalizes on the demand for generational change, Okupa could face his toughest contest yet.”
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions within Kasilo.
Some residents welcome Eninu’s candidacy as a breath of fresh air.
“Okupa has done his part, but we need someone who understands today’s challenges, especially for the youth,” said Sarah Apolot, a market vendor in Kasilo Town Council.
