Uganda’s Representative to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), Hon. Akol Rose Okullu, has reportedly declared her intention to contest for the Bukedea County parliamentary seat in the forthcoming 2026 general elections.
Akol, a seasoned politician and former Minister of Internal Affairs, is no stranger to Uganda’s political landscape.

She previously served as the Woman Member of Parliament for Bukedea District before losing to the current officeholder, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, in the 2016 elections.

Following her defeat, Akol successfully sought a seat in the East African Legislative Assembly where she served two consecutive terms from 2016 to 2021 and 2021 to 2026.
Throughout her decade-long tenure at EALA, she participated in shaping regional policies, strengthening cross-border trade frameworks, and advocating for Uganda’s interests within the East African Community.

Now, as her second term in Arusha draws to a close, Akol is set for a political comeback, this time targeting the Bukedea County seat.
Unlike her earlier contests where she directly battled with Speaker Anita Among for the district Woman MP position, Akol has chosen a different path, throwing her hat into the Bukedea County constituency, which has largely been a male-dominated race.
Several aspirants, both seasoned politicians and new entrants, have expressed interest in replacing the incumbent.
Akol’s vast experience in both local and regional politics, coupled with her ministerial background, is likely to give her campaign significant momentum.
Political analysts say her candidacy may realign voter dynamics in Bukedea County.
“Akol has a strong grassroots network and is respected for her no-nonsense leadership style. If she mobilizes well, she could turn the tide in what many thought was a predictable contest,” noted Andrew Otim, a political commentator based in Teso.
Sources close to Akol reveal that pressure from her supporters in Bukedea played a major role in her decision to return.
Many constituents reportedly believe that her regional exposure and national service record uniquely position her to advocate for Bukedea’s development needs.
Her campaign is expected to center on service delivery, infrastructure improvement, and youth empowerment, areas she has frequently spoken about during community engagements.
