In a bid to empower women and boost household incomes, Women and Girls Rights Advocacy Uganda (WAGRAU) has donated 100 chicks to four women groups in Olio Sub-county, Serere District.
The beneficiaries include Omunyolo Women’s Group (23 members), which received 30 chicks; Amurem Women’s Group (17 members), which received 25 chicks; Kakus Aima Women’s Group (41 members), which also received 25 chicks; and Akonyakinei Women’s Group (5 members), which received 20 chicks. Each group also received 20 kilograms of starter feeds.

According to Sylvia Oluka, WAGRAU’s Communications Officer, the initiative is aimed at enhancing women’s economic independence by creating a source of daily income.

She noted that with proper care, the chicks can multiply and significantly improve livelihoods.
“Today we gave out 100 chicks to our women groups, and we have plans to provide even more. I urge all beneficiaries to take good care of the chicks. If well maintained, they can grow and even multiply like heifers. When you’re given an egg, see it as an opportunity to raise a bull,” Oluka said.

She cautioned the women against selling or slaughtering the chicks, emphasizing that the donation is meant to support their economic growth.
“Don’t slaughter these chickens for visitors or sell them off. I encourage you to work together as a team. A team that works together prospers together. It is also easier to attract support when you are result-oriented. We shall grow big if we remain focused on our goal, economic empowerment,” she added.
Agudo Hellen, one of the trainers at WAGRAU, also called on men to respect the ownership of the chicks and not interfere with the women’s empowerment efforts.
“Men should not take advantage of this support by trying to forcefully take the chickens away from the women. Any such behavior will be met with serious consequences,” Agudo warned.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support and committed to working hard to grow the initiative.
“I am so delighted by WAGRAU’s support. When these chicks grow, I believe I’ll be able to improve my household income and support my children with school fees, medication, and food, easing the burden on my husband,” said Akello Esther, Chairperson of Kakus Aima Women’s Group.
Another beneficiary, Lakeri Akello from Amurem Women’s Group, encouraged fellow women to join WAGRAU.
“I encourage other women to join WAGRAU. We have seen how their support is uplifting us. I pray for more blessings and continued support so that women can achieve better living standards,” she said.
WAGRAU is a community-based organization operating in Serere District. Its vision is to create a society where girls and women are not discriminated against, but are treated with equality, respect, and dignity.
The organization focuses on women’s economic empowerment, community advocacy, pro bono legal services, women’s health, emergency support, and safe shelter.
