Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) has officially scheduled October 21st, 2025, for the grand launch of the Akaliait Development Foundation, a landmark initiative aimed at restoring dignity, promoting cultural values, and strengthening family structures within the Ateker speaking communities.
The event will be hosted at Bukedea Stadium and is spearheaded by Her Royal Majesty Akaliait Juliet Among, who also serves as the First Lady of the Iteso Cultural Union.

Her vision for the foundation stems from a deep concern over rising social issues such as domestic violence, early marriages, family breakdowns, and the erosion of moral values among the youth.

While addressing members of the ICU Council earlier today, ICU Prime Minister (Ekirigi) Mr. Andrew Ocole confirmed the launch date and underscored the foundation’s significance in uplifting women and securing the future of the girl child.
“The Akaliait Development Foundation will be a breakthrough in transforming families and ensuring a brighter future for our girls, it’s time to restore unity, dignity, and purpose in our homes through culture, empowerment, and education.” Ocole said

The Foundation will operate on four key pillars: Grooming the girl child in Iteso cultural values, Strengthening family stability across Ateker communities, Empowering women both socially and economically, and Championing girl child education and mentorship
Akaliait Juliet Among, celebrated for her compassionate leadership and deep community engagement, initiated the foundation as a strategic response to address persistent societal challenges in the region.
She believes that restoring the role of women and girls within the cultural and family fabric is central to sustainable community development.
The launch event is expected to attract national attention, with First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni set to officiate as the Chief Guest.
She will be joined by Vice President H.E. Jessica Rose Alupo and Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among all of whom have strong cultural and familial roots in the Teso sub-region.
Members of the ICU Council have lauded Akaliait’s vision and pledged full support for the foundation’s objectives.
Councilors noted that the initiative complements ICU’s broader mission to safeguard Iteso heritage while addressing contemporary family and societal challenges.
In her remarks following the announcement, Her Royal Majesty Akaliait Juliet Among emphasized the broader vision of the initiative.
“This foundation is not just about women, it’s about healing the soul of our community. When a woman is empowered, the entire home is empowered. When a girl child is mentored, the whole generation is transformed.” she said
