The Iteso Cultural Union Prime Minister, Mr. Andrew Ocole, has called on the Teso community to prepare their gardens for the first rains, emphasizing the importance of this step to address food insecurity caused by prolonged droughts.
He highlighted that a good harvest could also help parents raise school fees for their children’s second term.

Mr. Ocole made this appeal on Saturday afternoon while attending the leadership handover of the Irarak Icomia clan in Ocomia Village, Soroti District.

During the event, Mze Omuron, who served as clan chairman for 30 years, handed over the leadership to Mr. Jimmy Oriokot.
Mr. Ocole also encouraged the Ateker people, especially the youth, to avoid laziness and instead utilize the abundant land resources available to improve their livelihoods.

He pointed out that while 99% of the people in Teso largely depend on farming, over 65% of the land is underutilized, which contributes to poverty in many households.
He urged the community to invest in agriculture, particularly mixed farming, to maximize land use.
Mr. Ocole also noted that the office of Papa Emorimor is actively working to combat poverty, resolve education gaps, and address issues like land disputes and gender-based violence.
He encouraged the newly sworn-in leaders to align with the Iteso Cultural Union’s initiatives to transform the lives of their people.
Emorimor is set to continue his grassroots tours, starting with Soroti District, as he concludes his work in Teso North.
