The Government of Uganda, through the Office of the Member of Parliament for Pingire County, has finally delivered transformers to the region, marking the completion of over eight-year journey to electrify the area.
This significant milestone was achieved in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and local contractors, bringing long-awaited power to rural communities and promising a brighter future for residents.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Engineer Kamu Mukama from TBEA Uganda emphasized the importance of the project and the urgency of protecting electrical infrastructure.

“We have come to deliver 11 transformers around Serere, which will be installed in areas such as Osamito, Opunoi, Otooba, Labor, Ashitu, Ashui-1, Arapo, Mugarama-B, Mugarama-A, Okidi, and Ojaburun,” Engineer Mukama stated.
He highlighted the growing issue of vandalism affecting electrical appliances and urged the community to remain vigilant.

“In case you find someone tampering with the equipment, report to local leaders immediately. Vandals are targeting transformers, stealing oil, wires, and other components, which disrupts service delivery.”
The engineer also outlined additional steps to ensure safety and efficiency.
“We will clear trees growing near the power lines to prevent accidents. Once the installation is complete, power is expected to be energized within a month, and full operation should commence in about ten days,” he added.
Fred Opolot, the Member of Parliament for Pingire County, expressed his joy and pride in delivering on a key pledge made during his term.
“This is a milestone for me as an MP and for Pingire as a constituency. For eight years, electricity poles and wires have stood idle. It’s been a long wait, but today we are delivering 11 transformers with capacities of 50 kVA and 100 kVA,” MP Opolot said.
He noted that rural electrification is a core priority of the NRM government, aimed at improving lives in underserved areas.
“Electricity must go to the last mile. This project demonstrates the government’s commitment to that goal,” he added.
The MP commended the Ministry of Energy and particularly the State Minister for Energy, Hon. Okasai Opolot, for their unwavering support.
“This electrification will boost economic activity, especially for the youth and artisans. Many saloons and small businesses along this route rely on batteries or solar panels. Access to electricity will make their work easier, allowing them to serve more customers and increase their income,” Opolot explained.
The delivery of transformers has been met with widespread praise from residents and local leaders.
For many, the long wait has been a source of frustration, but the realization of this project has sparked optimism.
Opedun Moses, the LCI Defense Secretary for Opunio, expressed gratitude to the government and MP Opolot.
“This is a great achievement for our community. We’ve waited for years, and now we can finally see progress,” he said.
Samuel Odongo, a local carpenter, shared his excitement about the potential economic benefits.
“With electricity, my work will improve. I can now use electric tools, which will save me time and increase productivity,” he remarked.
Despite the celebratory mood, concerns over vandalism remain a serious challenge.
Engineer Mukama warned that such acts could derail progress and urged residents to take collective responsibility for protecting the infrastructure.
Additionally, the contractor emphasized the importance of community cooperation during the installation process, particularly in clearing trees near power lines to prevent accidents.
The electrification of Pingire County is expected to bring transformative changes.
Small businesses, including saloons and workshops, will benefit from reliable power, enabling them to expand operations and improve service delivery.
The availability of electricity is also anticipated to attract new investments and create job opportunities, particularly for the youth.
MP Opolot concluded his remarks with optimism, saying, “This project will not only improve individual livelihoods but also contribute to the overall development of Pingire County. It is a step towards a brighter and more prosperous future for our people.”
