The media fraternity and residents of Teso sub-region are mourning the untimely death of former Soroti City Spokesperson, Robert Okello Onanyang, popularly known as “Journalist,” whose passing was confirmed early today.
In an official statement, his family, the late Onanyang Lawrence and Auma Mary Magdalene of Mukongoro in Kumi District, announced with deep sorrow and profound shock the sudden death of their beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend.

Okello, who had served Soroti Municipality before it transitioned to the City diligently in his role as spokesperson, breathed his last at Aledes Clinic, where he was receiving medical attention.

His body has since been transferred to Soroti for further management and funeral arrangements.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved Robert. His sudden departure has left a deep void in our lives,” the family said in their statement, appealing for prayers and support during this difficult period.

Friends and colleagues described Okello as a passionate communicator, a devoted public servant, and a man who loved his community.
He was widely known across the region for his approachable nature, professionalism, and dedication to public service.
“Robert was more than just a spokesperson; he was a bridge between the city administration and the people. His ability to listen, communicate effectively, and represent the city leadership made him a respected figure,” noted a former colleague in Soroti Municipal Council.
His death has triggered an outpouring of grief on social media, with many remembering him for his humility and contribution to journalism and public relations.
The family has not yet released the full funeral program, but sources indicate that preparations are underway to lay him to rest in his ancestral home in Mukongoro, Kumi District.
“We kindly ask for your thoughts and prayers for the family during this trying time,” the family appealed.
Robert Okello Onanyang’s passing is a huge loss to Soroti City and the entire Teso sub-region, where he is fondly remembered not only for his work in public relations but also for his mentorship to many young journalists and communicators.
Funeral arrangements and burial details are expected to be communicated in the coming days.
