President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni have pledged financial support worth UGX 600 million to the Teso Widows Development Initiative (TEWDI), an organization committed to uplifting the livelihoods of widows and vulnerable families across the Teso sub-region.
The pledge was made during a special meeting on Wednesday at the First Family’s country home in Ntungamo, Ntungamo District.

The funds will be directed towards the establishment of a technical institute under TEWDI, with the aim of equipping widows, orphans, and young people in Teso with hands-on vocational skills that can improve self-reliance and household incomes.

Speaking during the gathering, President Museveni commended the widows’ association for organizing themselves into a structured initiative that seeks not only relief but long-term empowerment.
He said that Uganda’s development journey depends heavily on equipping citizens with practical skills in addition to formal education.

“Widows and their children must not be left behind in development. By giving you this seed support, we want you to build an institution that will serve generations. With skills, our people will have jobs, incomes, and dignity,” President Museveni stated.
The First Lady, who also serves as the Minister of Education and Sports, praised the resilience of the women who have turned their challenges into an organized movement for economic transformation.
She reassured TEWDI leaders of government’s commitment to supporting skills-based training as a path to sustainable livelihoods.
“Education and skills are the greatest inheritance we can give to our children and communities. This contribution is meant to lay a foundation for a technical institute that will train tailors, carpenters, caterers, mechanics, and other professionals. From here, widows and their children will begin to write a new story of independence and prosperity,” Janet Museveni said.
