Soroti County Member of Parliament and National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice Chairperson for Soroti District Hon. Patrick Aeku has been taken to Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, for advanced medical treatment following a violent attack on July 17, 2025 allegedly linked to the recently concluded NRM party primaries.
Aeku, who emerged victorious in the hotly contested NRM primaries against his rival Samuel Eninu, sustained serious injuries after being assaulted by a group of individuals reportedly affiliated with Eninu’s camp.

The MP had initially been admitted at Soroti Doctors Plaza before being transferred to Kampala Hospital for further medical management.

As his condition required more specialized care, arrangements were made to take him to Kenya for continued treatment at the renowned Aga Khan medical facility.
Sources close to the legislator say the attack was premeditated and aimed at eliminating him under the guise of electoral dispute.

According to eyewitness accounts, Aeku was ambushed and severely beaten by unidentified individuals who accused him of rigging the primary election.
The accusations leveled against him include voter bribery, intimidation, paying election officials, orchestrating multiple voting, and disenfranchisement of eligible voters. Aeku has, however, categorically denied all these allegations.
Speaking briefly before his transfer to Kenya, the Soroti County MP expressed disappointment over the violent turn of events, describing the attack as “a calculated ploy to end my life, not just about elections.”
“This was not politics, it was an assassination attempt masked as post-election anger. But I am grateful to be alive. My commitment to serve the people of Soroti County remains firm despite my current health condition,” he said.
Despite the gravity of the incident, Aeku has appealed to his supporters to remain calm and law-abiding.
He urged them not to seek revenge, emphasizing that violence only undermines the democratic process and unity within the party and community.
“I want to ask my supporters to stay calm. Do not retaliate. Let us maintain peace and allow the truth to emerge through lawful means. Our strength lies in our unity, not in vengeance,” Aeku said in his message from Kampala Hospital before being taken.
As of the time of publication, Samuel Eninu and his campaign team had not issued any public statement regarding the incident or their alleged involvement in the assault on Hon. Aeku.
Efforts to reach Eninu for comment were unsuccessful.
Political analysts in the region have called on NRM’s Electoral Commission and national leadership to thoroughly investigate the violence and ensure accountability.
They argue that failure to address such issues could erode public trust in the party’s internal democratic processes.
“This attack raises serious questions about the conduct of internal elections in the NRM. There must be consequences for political violence if the party wants to maintain integrity,” said a local political observer in Soroti.
