Soroti University has announced the acquisition of a brand new Class B ambulance, registration number UA 483AE, purchased at a cost of 271 million shillings, in a move aimed at strengthening emergency medical response in the Teso sub-region and supporting its teaching hospital.
In a statement shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, Soroti University confirmed that the ambulance is “fully equipped with additional medical specifications approved by medical ambulance experts from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Works and Transport.”

According to the university, the purchase underscores its commitment to improving health service delivery and training capacity for its medical students.

University administrators said the new vehicle would enhance timely and safe transport of patients, especially critical cases referred from rural health centres to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital and the university’s own teaching facilities.
The Class B ambulance type is designed to offer advanced pre-hospital care, and this unit reportedly includes essential equipment such as a stretcher, oxygen supply systems, emergency medical kits, and advanced patient monitoring devices.

Health officials say such specifications meet national standards for professional ambulance service.
The leadership has described the new ambulance as “a critical asset for improving emergency health services and clinical training.”
They noted that it would be used not only for patient transfers but also for practical training of medical and nursing students.
“This investment is part of our broader plan to improve healthcare outcomes in Eastern Uganda,” they said. “It will strengthen our capacity to provide safe and timely medical evacuation services and ensure that our graduates are well-trained in modern emergency care systems.”
The acquisition comes at a time when many public hospitals and health centres in Eastern Uganda face challenges with insufficient or aging ambulance fleets, limiting their capacity to respond swiftly to emergencies, especially in remote areas.
Soroti University is one of Uganda’s newest public universities, with a special focus on health sciences, agriculture, and education.
