The Kaberamaido Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC), Peter Arikos, turned a public event into a personal milestone when he proposed to his longtime social media girlfriend, Amon Eunice.
The proposal took place on the evening of March 8, 2025.

Arikos, who is serving as ARDC for Kaberamaido surprised attendees by expressing his “undying love” for Amon, a Mass Communication student from Makerere University.

He then went down on one knee and presented her with a ring, sparking cheers, applause, and ululations from the gathered crowd.
The two met on social media in 2023 through TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), where they exchanged light-hearted videos, social commentary, and gradually developed a deeper connection.

Speaking after the proposal, Arikos revealed that their online friendship led into a meaningful relationship, although they had met in person only a few times before he decided to make the bold move.
“I thought Women’s Day, a celebration of strength and love, was the perfect time to honour the woman who has brought meaning to my life,” Arikos said.
“We began as strangers sharing memes and ideas, and now she is my world.”
Amon, visibly emotional, accepted the proposal with a smile and a quiet “yes,” before being embraced by friends and well-wishers.
“I didn’t see it coming,” she said.
“He had hinted that Women’s Day was special to him, but I never imagined he would propose in front of the whole district.”
While this may seem like an unconventional gesture for a public official, it is not the first time Ugandan leaders have made headlines for mixing love with politics.
In 2020, then-Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze’s renewal of vows at a political rally sparked similar excitement and debate.
The intertwining of personal moments with public service events has become increasingly common, especially in the age of social media, where leaders aim to appear relatable and human.
