The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) has officially announced that its presidential candidate, Gen. Mugisha Muntu, has been cleared for nomination by the Electoral Commission (EC), paving the way for his long-awaited participation in the 2026 general elections.
In a statement released via the party’s official X (formerly Twitter) platform on Monday evening, ANT confirmed that Gen. Muntu had successfully submitted the required signatures and paperwork for clearance.

“We are pleased to announce that our Presidential Candidate, Gen. @mugishamuntu, has officially been cleared for nomination. He will be nominated tomorrow, with the exact time to be confirmed by the EC. We thank all our supporters for their unwavering and steadfast commitment,” the statement read.

Later, the party provided more specifics, indicating that Gen. Muntu’s nomination had been scheduled for 1:00 p.m. today at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala.
The ANT further invited supporters and the media to a post-nomination press conference at the party’s head office in Bukoto.

The clearance marks the conclusion of a tense wait for the ANT and its partner, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
Just last week, top leaders from both formations, including ANT National Coordinator Alice Alaso and PFF’s Michael Kabaziguruka, stormed the EC headquarters seeking clarification on what was delaying Muntu’s clearance.
They accused some electoral officials of unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles, sparking concerns of political foul play.
The EC later confirmed it had written to ANT, pointing out certain areas that required additional verification before the nomination process could proceed.
With the latest development, those concerns now appear resolved.
Ms. Alaso, who has been at the forefront of the negotiations with the Commission, welcomed the news with relief.
“Our candidate is now officially on course. The delay was unfortunate, but we are glad the matter has been settled within the law. We thank our supporters for their patience and commitment to this cause,” she said in a brief interview.
Gen. Mugisha Muntu, a former army commander and past president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), is widely respected for his reputation of integrity, discipline, and soft-spoken leadership style.
He has positioned himself as a moderate opposition candidate capable of bridging divisions and restoring trust in Uganda’s governance.
His candidacy is viewed as significant, especially after ANT and PFF signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) earlier this year to collaborate on mobilization, candidate support, and broader opposition unity efforts.
The joint platform has been billed as a strategic attempt to pool resources and consolidate alternative voices ahead of the 2026 race.
