The Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Eciru Oliach, has rallied students to remain focused and determined in the pursuit of their dreams.
He made the call while presiding over a thanksgiving Mass held at St. Mary’s Girls’ Secondary School Madera (SMAGS), in celebration of the school’s outstanding performance in the 2024 UCE and UACE examinations.

Addressing the jubilant students and staff, Bishop Eciru emphasized the value of time and purpose, urging learners to “spend every minute doing the right things and working for the glory of the Lord.”

He encouraged them to remain accountable for their time and to develop the discipline of saying no to distractions that derail them from their goals.
“Achievers learn to say no to what distracts them from realizing their dreams,” the Bishop said, stressing the importance of focus, proactivity, and foresight.

“Do not wait for challenges to come. Be prepared and self-driven. Learn to turn your challenges into opportunities,” he added.
He further advised students to put jokes aside and concentrate on their studies, reminding them that what they do today determines their tomorrow.
Bishop Eciru also called on the learners to be grateful to their parents and guardians for giving them the chance to attain an education.
Rev. Sr. Salume Aguti, the Head Teacher of SMAGS, led the school community in thanking God for the excellent results, which saw the school emerge as one of the best-performing institutions in the region.
She attributed the success to discipline, commitment, and hard work from both students and staff.
“We must keep the theme of academic excellence alive,” Sr. Aguti said, adding her gratitude to the local security forces for their unwavering support in maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment.
Victoria Anyait, Chairperson of the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA), lauded the efforts of both parents and students in supporting the growth of SMAGS.
She described education as the most powerful tool for success and encouraged learners to keep aiming high.
“Prepare to celebrate your success,” she told the students, “because with education, you hold the key to your future.”
