Soroti City West NRM Flag Bearer David Calvin Echodu has reportedly announced his intention to challenge Capt. Mike Mukula for the position of National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda in the upcoming party elections.
Echodu’s declaration has sparked significant interest within the NRM circles, as Mukula, a seasoned politician and longtime holder of the position, has been a dominant figure in Eastern Uganda’s political landscape.

Mukula has held the seat since 2005 and has been instrumental in mobilizing support for the ruling party in the region.

Echodu, who recently emerged as the NRM flag bearer for Soroti City West, is seen as a rising political figure with a growing support base.
His decision to contest Mukula’s position signals an internal shift within the NRM ranks, with younger politicians seeking to assert themselves in the party’s leadership structures.

In an interview, sources close to Echodu revealed that he is positioning himself as a candidate for generational change and grassroots inclusivity.
“The people of Eastern Uganda deserve fresh leadership that prioritizes their needs. I am ready to bring new energy to the party and ensure that the region gets better representation at the national level,” Echodu is quoted as saying.
“What you have heard is the truth and it take it as a gospel truth. He is coming to contest and we are happy,” said Andrew Odongo the Public Relations Officer for Team Echodu
Capt. Mukula, a former Minister of State for Health and a key player in NRM’s mobilization efforts, has yet to respond to Echodu’s challenge.
However, political analysts note that Mukula’s influence in the region remains strong, owing to his extensive networks, experience, and contributions to the party’s success in past elections.
Observers suggest that Echodu’s candidacy could reflect growing discontent among certain factions within the party, particularly among younger leaders who feel that the old guard has held onto power for too long.
The contest is expected to draw interest from party delegates, who will ultimately decide the outcome.
The NRM’s internal elections for regional vice chairpersons are expected to be highly competitive, with candidates vying for influence ahead of the 2026 general elections.
If Echodu formally launches his campaign, it could set the stage for one of the most closely watched races in the party’s internal politics.
As the political landscape in Eastern Uganda evolves, the battle between Mukula and Echodu could shape the future of NRM’s leadership in the region.
Party members and voters will be keen to see how both candidates articulate their visions and mobilize support in the run-up to the elections.
