Katakwi District has been struck by a devastating wildfire that razed nearly 300 homes and destroyed property worth millions of shillings in the parishes of Osep and Oedepus in Ngariam Subcounty.

The fire, which spread over the course of a week, has left hundreds of families displaced and in dire need of assistance.

Moses Iteit, the LC3 chairperson of Ngariam Subcounty, revealed that the affected parishes were recently vacated due to flooding, leaving the area vulnerable.
He suggested that the fire might have been deliberately set by Karimojong warriors or local hunters, although no casualties have been reported.

“The damage is extensive, and the fire occurred on consecutive days. We suspect foul play, but investigations are ongoing,” Iteit said.
Osep Parish, home to 1,689 residents and over 400 houses, was among the hardest-hit areas.
LC2 chairperson Michael Opiok expressed concern over the extensive losses and called for government intervention.
“We urgently need iron sheets to rebuild homes and food supplies to support the affected families. Security should also be strengthened to prevent such incidents,” Opiok urged.
George Israel Odongo, a local resident who witnessed the destruction, described the losses as catastrophic.
He noted that families have lost not only their homes but also essential items like food, clothing, and construction materials such as grass.
“We need an equalization grant to address the challenges faced by communities near the Karamoja region. This support is critical for recovery,” Odongo emphasized.
Geoffrey Omolo, the LC5 chairperson of Katakwi District, admitted that the district was unaware of the incident until recently.
He advised against bush burning, especially during the dry season, citing a similar tragedy in neighboring Nabilatuk District.
“Stray fires are becoming increasingly common. We need to raise awareness about the dangers of uncontrolled bush burning and implement preventive measures,” Omolo said.
The affected communities are now appealing to the government and humanitarian organizations for immediate assistance to rebuild their lives.
Food aid, construction materials, and improved security measures are among their top priorities.

Congratulations for Hon.Dan, we stand with you come 2026
