Fourteen (14) of the eighteen (18) victims involved in Monday’s tragic road accident in Serere District have been discharged from hospital after showing significant signs of recovery, local authorities have confirmed.
The update was delivered by Serere Resident District Commissioner (RDC) John Stephen Ekoom, who also represented the Serere District leadership at the burial of Mr. Opolot Emmanuel, the only fatality from the crash.

The burial took place on Saturday at Ococwa Village, Atoot Sub County, in Ngora District, where hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their last respects.

The accident occurred on Monday, November 3, 2025, at Ocaapa Cattle Market in Serere District when a Fuso truck carrying NRM supporters from a rally addressed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni overturned, killing one person and injuring 18 others.
The truck, registration number UBP 858V, was transporting party supporters from Serere Town Council to Kyere Town Council.

Speaking at the burial, RDC Ekoom expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family and praised the resilience of the survivors.
He said the district leadership continues to monitor the progress of those still under medical care.
“Out of the 18 accident victims, 14 have been discharged and are now recovering from their homes. The remaining four, who were referred to Mbale for specialized treatment, are also responding positively. Even this morning, I spoke to them and received encouraging updates,” Ekoom said.
He commended the medical staff at Serere Health Centre IV, Bethesda Hospital, and Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for their professionalism and commitment in handling the emergency.
Ekoom also cautioned drivers against reckless behavior during the ongoing political campaign season, warning that overloading, speeding, and careless driving continue to cost innocent lives.
“We must be extra careful as we transport our people to and from campaign venues. Human life is precious, and we should not take safety for granted,” he emphasized.
At the burial, mourners described the late Emmanuel Opolot, aged 24, as a humble, hardworking, and respectful young man who had a bright future ahead of him.
Opolot, who lived with his grandfather Mzee Constant Opolot Otim, was a resident of Abuket Parish, Kyere Sub County in Serere District but hailed originally from Ococwa Village, where he has been laid to rest.
The NRM leadership in Serere has since extended UGX 27 million to support the victims’ treatment and burial arrangements as the community continues to recover from the tragic incident.
