President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has today commissioned the Acomai Irrigation Scheme in Kamutur Sub-county, Bukedea District, marking another milestone in his government’s effort to promote modern and climate-resilient agriculture across Uganda.
While commissioning the project, President Museveni hailed the initiative as a transformative investment that will enhance agricultural productivity, ensure food security, and stabilize farmers’ incomes through reliable irrigation.

“This great initiative will improve agricultural productivity by providing reliable water for farming,” the President said.

“God gave us dominion over nature, and this is proof to that effect. Therefore, take the water from the swamp to the dry land and irrigate. When you do that, you are helping God to make rain in the months when He doesn’t bring it.”
He emphasized that irrigation not only boosts yields but also mitigates the effects of floods and drought, enabling farmers to engage in year-round production.

“This project serves both purposes: production and protection,” Museveni added, encouraging farmers in Bukedea and neighboring Bulambuli District to embrace irrigation as a tool for wealth creation.
The Acomai Irrigation Scheme, serves communities across Bukedea and Bulambuli districts.
It aims to provide sustainable water supply for crop production, livestock, and aquaculture. Once fully operational, the scheme is expected to directly benefit over 2,000 households while supporting extensive agricultural production in the wider Teso region.
In her remarks, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, commended President Museveni for prioritizing projects that uplift rural communities and foster economic transformation.
“We thank him for commissioning the Acomai Irrigation Scheme, which serves communities in both Bukedea and Bulambuli Districts,” Speaker Among said.
“This project is a blessing to our people and will go a long way in ensuring that farmers no longer depend solely on unpredictable rainfall.”
During the same visit, President Museveni also officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Teso Animal Breeding and Demonstration Centre in Bukedea.
The centre is designed to enhance livestock development through improved breeding of dairy and beef cattle, poultry, piggery, and fish farming.
According to Speaker Among, the centre will play a key role in diversifying household incomes and strengthening the agricultural value chain in Teso.
“These projects will play a pivotal role in transforming the livelihoods of our people,” she said.
She further praised the government’s continued investment in agricultural infrastructure, describing it as a major driver for rural industrialization and job creation.
As President Museveni concluded his engagements in the Teso subregion, Speaker Among expressed gratitude on behalf of the people of Bukedea for the President’s consistent support and commitment to the area’s development.
