Traffic along the busy Kumi–Mbale highway has been brought to a standstill after a trailer overturned at Atutur Swamp early this morning.
The accident occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m. when the trailer reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid a motorcyclist.

The heavy vehicle veered off the road and overturned, completely blocking both lanes of the highway.

Eyewitnesses say the motorcyclist suddenly swerved onto the trailer’s path, forcing the driver to make a sharp turn, which led to the vehicle flipping.
Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, but emergency responders say the trailer driver and two occupants sustained minor injuries and were rushed to Atutur Hospital for treatment.

Police and traffic officers are currently at the scene managing the situation.
Authorities have advised all motorists traveling between Kumi and Mbale or heading to Soroti to use alternative routes through Kanyum Road or Kelim as the wreckage is being cleared.
“We urge all road users to be patient and follow the diversions provided. The process to remove the trailer is ongoing and may take several hours,” said a traffic officer at the scene.
This section of the Kumi–Mbale road has previously been cited for poor visibility and narrow bends, raising concerns over safety, especially during peak traffic hours.
