The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, has been officially nominated unopposed as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament seat ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The announcement was made on Monday following a verification exercise by the NRM Electoral Commission, which disqualified her sole challenger, Hellen Akol Odeke.

According to the Commission, Odeke failed to meet key eligibility requirements, notably residency.

NRM Electoral Commission officials said investigations revealed that Akol is not a resident of the village she had claimed in her nomination documents.
“Our findings established that Ms. Hellen Akol Odeke only recently acquired a piece of land in the area and does not meet the mandatory residency requirement as per the NRM election guidelines.”

This development clears the way for Speaker Among to carry the ruling party’s flag into the 2026 elections for the third consecutive time, continuing her dominance in Bukedea politics.
Among, who first entered Parliament in 2016 and became Speaker in 2022, enjoys strong support both within the party and among voters in Bukedea.
Supporters erupted in celebration as the announcement was made, with many praising the party’s vetting process and pledging continued support for the Speaker’s leadership.
In a brief comment after her unopposed nomination, Among expressed gratitude to the people of Bukedea and the NRM structures for the trust and confidence in her leadership.
Meanwhile, party officials have urged calm and unity among members, calling on those who were not successful to rally behind the party’s flag bearer.
The 2026 general election calendar is beginning to take shape, with the ruling party moving swiftly to prepare its strongest candidates for the contest ahead.
