ELECTION WATCH: Moroto RDC Resigns, Joins Race for Kaberamaido Woman MP 2026 Polls

In a significant political development ahead of the 2026 general elections, Jane Frances Amongin Okili, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Moroto, has officially thrown her hat into the ring for the Kaberamaido District Woman Member of Parliament seat.
In a post shared on her verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, Amongin Okili announced her resignation from the RDC position, effective June 13, 2025, citing her intention to focus on her parliamentary bid.
“I announce my resignation from the post of Resident District Commissioner-Moroto effective 13th June 2025 to focus on my bid to become a Member of Parliament of Kaberamaido District. I express my deepest gratitude to @KagutaMuseveni for the opportunity to serve in Gov’t,” she wrote.
Amongin’s decision marks the beginning of what is expected to be a heated political contest in Kaberamaido, a district in Eastern Uganda where the NRM faces stiff competition from opposition-leaning regions such as Teso.
Her entry into the race immediately positions her as a frontrunner, given her extensive experience in government and grassroots mobilization.
A longtime member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Amongin has served in various administrative roles, earning a reputation for discipline, loyalty, and community service.
As RDC in several districts including Moroto, she has been instrumental in coordinating government programs, enforcing security policies, and mobilizing support for government initiatives.
Political observers say her resignation is a strategic move to gain ground early in the race and consolidate support at home.
Her strong links within the NRM, as well as with the Office of the President, could provide her with a robust campaign structure and resources.
“She’s not only popular within NRM structures but also has a grassroots appeal, especially among women and youth. Her track record as RDC gives her a strong administrative and political edge,” said a local NRM mobilizer in Kaberamaido.
The current Woman MP for Kaberamaido, Hon. Veronica Eragu Bichetero (Independent), has also officially declared she will seek re-election.
