Makerere University has officially invited His Royal Highness Emorimor Papa Iteso Paul Sande Emolot to serve as Chief Guest during the upcoming graduation ceremony for a pioneering course in parenting science.

The graduation, which marks the completion of a specialized practitioners course in the “Science of Designing Evidence-Based Parenting Interventions,” is scheduled to take place on June 6, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the School of Public Health Auditorium, Makerere University Main Campus.

According to a formal invitation signed by Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe and dated May 8, 2025, the event is a collaborative initiative between Makerere University and the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD).

“It is with great honor that Makerere University, in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, invites you to preside as the Chief Guest at the graduation ceremony for participants who have completed a specialized course titled the Science of Designing Evidence-Based Parenting Interventions,” the letter reads in part.

The course, launched in October 2024, is designed to empower parenting practitioners and policymakers with advanced knowledge and practical skills in developing and implementing interventions that are rooted in scientific research.

This inaugural cohort drew participants from government institutions, local governments, and civil society organizations across Uganda, underlining the national significance of parenting as a developmental priority.

As a cultural leader who has championed family well-being, child protection, and education, Emorimor Emolot’s presence is expected to elevate the ceremony’s message and inspire greater commitment to strengthening family systems.

“Your role as Chief Guest would not only honor the graduates but also inspire continued collaboration toward fostering healthier families and resilient communities across Uganda,” Prof. Nawangwe noted.

The event will attract an array of dignitaries from government, academia, and the development sector, highlighting the multi-sectoral approach needed to support effective parenting and community transformation.

The ceremony is also anticipated to reaffirm Uganda’s commitment to integrating scientific knowledge into social development programs.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Queen of the Iteso, Her Highness Toto Akaliait Among Juliet Emolot, has been actively engaging with Makerere University stakeholders ahead of the June graduation.

She recently held a series of consultative meetings with the university management and members of the Iteso community at Makerere.

The meetings, convened by Dr. Siu Godfrey, were attended by notable individuals including Ekwaro Francis, among others.

The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between Makerere University and the Iteso community, particularly in areas of research, education, and social development.

Toto Akaliait emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships that support vulnerable families and children, and she praised the university for its efforts in launching evidence-based parenting education.

The involvement of both the Emorimor and the Queen of the Iteso in this high-level academic event underscores the growing recognition of traditional institutions as key stakeholders in national development.

Their joint engagement reflects a broader shift toward inclusive and culturally sensitive approaches in addressing Uganda’s social challenges.

With the graduation ceremony on the horizon, anticipation is building among graduates and stakeholders.

The event promises not only to celebrate academic achievement but also to catalyze stronger networks among practitioners committed to building healthier, more resilient families through science-based interventions.
