Yesterday at midday, Uganda witnessed a political move as David Calvin Echodu, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for Soroti City West, formally announced his intention to challenge Captain Mike Mukula for the position of NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda.

The announcement, made at Skyz Hotel in Kampala, marks a major move against Mukula, who has held the influential seat since 2005.

Echodu’s decision comes at a time when the ruling party is grappling with internal challenges, ranging from leadership renewal to grassroots mobilization.

Echodu declared that his candidacy is aimed at revitalizing the party and ensuring continued public trust in the NRM.

With the Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections fast approaching, Echodu’s entry into the race signals a competitive showdown against both Capt. Mike Mukula and Defence Minister Jacob Oboth Oboth, setting the stage for a high-stakes political battle in Eastern Uganda.

Addressing the press in his maiden speech, Echodu struck a balance between praising President Yoweri Museveni’s leadership and articulating his own vision for the party’s future.

“President Museveni’s transformative leadership has brought peace and prosperity to Uganda. His governance has earned him widespread support, and it is our duty as NRM leaders to ensure that the party remains strong and continues winning elections,” Echodu stated.

He emphasized the need for the NRM to evolve, recognizing that political parties must adapt to shifting social and economic landscapes.

“As a party, we must learn to grow, adjust, and adapt to changes if we want to remain in power. We must broaden our base and strengthen our connection with the people. If we fail to serve Ugandans, we risk losing the party’s position in national leadership,” he said.

Echodu made a direct appeal to NRM supporters, urging them to rally behind his candidacy.

“I am offering myself for the position of NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda because I believe we need leaders who represent the people’s interests. We must work together to correct past mistakes and build a stronger NRM.

Capt. Mike Mukula, a former Minister of State for Health, has been a dominant force in Eastern Uganda’s NRM politics for nearly two decades.

He has successfully fended off multiple challengers, including businessman Sanjay Tanna in 2020.

His tenure has been marked by strong party mobilization efforts and an ability to navigate Uganda’s complex political landscape.

However, Echodu and his supporters argue that it is time for change, citing concerns over leadership stagnation, internal divisions, and the party’s declining popularity in some regions.

“We respect the contributions of those who have come before us, but leadership must be dynamic,” Echodu remarked. “We must inject new energy and hope into our region.”

Uganda’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Nelson Oceger, praised Echodu’s commitment to the NRM and his role in securing the party’s victory in Teso Sub-region over the years.

“Mr. Echodu was instrumental in regaining key NRM positions in Teso. He mobilized resources, built strong party structures, and ensured that NRM remained in control. Unfortunately, some opportunists have claimed credit for these victories,” Oceger noted.

He also warned of emerging threats within the party, including; Self-interest over party interests, Fear of internal competition, Political intolerance, Corruption and complacency

“We have come to correct these issues and ensure that NRM remains strong and united. This journey is about restoring confidence in our leadership and inspiring Ugandans,” Oceger emphasized.

With the CEC elections looming, Echodu faces a tough two-pronged battle: convincing NRM delegates that he is the right choice while navigating the power structures that have kept Mukula in place for years.

Meanwhile, Mukula remains a formidable opponent with deep party networks and financial resources, while Jacob Oboth Oboth’s entry into the race adds another layer of complexity.

For Echodu, the success of his campaign will depend on his ability to; Mobilize grassroots support across Eastern Uganda, convince NRM delegates that leadership change is necessary and present a compelling vision for the party’s future

As the campaign heats up, the question remains: Can Echodu overcome Mukula’s entrenched influence and usher in a new era for Eastern Uganda’s NRM leadership?

The answer will become clearer as the NRM gears up for its highly anticipated CEC elections later this year.
